Classic D&D was my introduction to roleplaying. My first regular group played Traveller & AD&D.

Looking back on it, however, I’d venture to say that—although we said we played AD&D—we were really playing D&D supplemented by the AD&D books. We didn’t use weapon based AC adjustments, weapon speeds, & lots of other things. The way we handled surprise, initiative, & combat was often closer to how it was described in D&D than AD&D.

Others have told me that their old AD&D groups did much the same.

I think this is because most of us started with a basic set or were introduced to the game by someone who had learned it from a basic set. When we got the AD&D books, it was natural to play things mostly the same, using what we liked (& understood) from the AD&D books & ignoring the rest.
