Something I need to think about... Sometimes, it's good to have different mechanics for different things. e.g. In D&D, combat, magic, & thief skills each have different mechanics as appropriate. (Note that this is even true in 3e with it's unified d20 mechanic.) Sometimes, however, it's good to have the same mechanic for different things, because they are mostly the same. Melee & missile combat are mostly the same. The magic of MUs & clerics are mostly the same. A game like Risus, however, goes even farther. It has basically one mechanic with three variations, which is used for (typically) everything. The difference between sword fighting, spell slinging, furtive activities, & basket weaving are all relegated to fluff.
