Here are some thoughts I had on turning the Guitar Hero guitar controller into an actual instrument.

The Guitar Hero guitar controller has five fret buttons: green, red, yellow, blue, & orange.

Many songs get by with the three foundational chords that we call I, IV, & V.

Guitarists often use power chords that are—instead of full chords—intervals of a fourth or fifth.

  • green + red → 1 + 4
  • green + yellow → 1 + 5
  • red + yellow → 4 + 7
  • red + blue → 4 + 1
  • yellow + blue → 5 + 1
  • yellow + orange → 5 + 2

This could possibly be expanded with:

  • green + blue: 1 + 6
  • red + orange: 1 + 2

For single notes, we could use the pentatonic scale.

  • green: 1
  • red: 3
  • yellow: 4
  • blue: 5
  • orange: 7
