I used to really not like the level draining power of undead in D&D. As a DM, I seldom used level draining undead or tried to find an alternative. While there’s nothing wrong with that—as with so many things D&D—I have a different perspective now. I think the idea behind level drain is that it is suppossed to make you avoid melee combat with that monster at all costs. You either flee & don’t come back, or you figure out how to attack it indirectly. Drop level drain, & the monster becomes just another encounter. With level drain, it becomes a challenging puzzle.
