(...yet another work in progress...)

It is a mistake to think that role playing was a sudden innovation. Even before the Braunsteins & Blackmoor, wargamers would role play their parts.

  • "hobby games" a better name for the industry than "wargames"

  • Avalon Hill
  • SPI
  • GDW
  • TSR

  • Careers (influenced Wesely's Braunstein games)
  • Civilization
  • Diplomacy
  • Kingmaker
  • Magic Realm
  • Outdoor Survival ("required" by oD&D!)

Dungeon! was created after Arneson ran the first Blackmoor dungeon. The game, in turn, influenced the Blackmoor campaign to head back into the dungeon.

I used to think of D&D (i.e. classic & advanced) as being overly combat centric. When you compare classic D&D to a game like TFT, though... (or even D&D3e)

  • TFT
  • MK
  • D&D3e
